Returns At Resideo Technologies (NYSE:REZI) Appear To Be Weighed Down
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Resideo Technologies' (NYSE:REZI) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Resideo Technologies is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = US$608m ÷ (US$5.8b - US$1.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to October 2021).
So, Resideo Technologies has an ROCE of 14%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 14%.

The Trend Of ROCE
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has consistently earned 14% for the last four years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 30% in that time. Since 14% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
The Bottom Line On Resideo Technologies' ROCE
In the end, Resideo Technologies has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. However, over the last three years, the stock hasn't provided much growth to shareholders in the way of total returns. For that reason, savvy investors might want to look further into this company in case it's a prime investment.
