If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. However, after investigating Cadre Holdings (NYSE:CDRE), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Cadre Holdings, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.12 = US$61m ÷ (US$617m - US$95m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Thus, Cadre Holdings has an ROCE of 12%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Aerospace & Defense industry average of 9.6% it's much better.

The Trend Of ROCE

The trend of ROCE doesn't look fantastic because it's fallen from 18% four years ago, while the business's capital employed increased by 130%. Usually this isn't ideal, but given Cadre Holdings conducted a capital raising before their most recent earnings announcement, that would've likely contributed, at least partially, to the increased capital employed figure. Cadre Holdings probably hasn't received a full year of earnings yet from the new funds it raised, so these figures should be taken with a grain of salt. Additionally, we found that Cadre Holdings' most recent EBIT figure is around the same as the prior year, so we'd attribute the drop in ROCE mostly to the capital raise.

What We Can Learn From Cadre Holdings' ROCE

Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by Cadre Holdings' reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. Although the market must be expecting these trends to improve because the stock has gained 76% over the last three years. But if the trajectory of these underlying trends continue, we think the likelihood of it being a multi-bagger from here isn't high.
