Strong week for Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises (NYSE:BW) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of three-year loss

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:BW) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 211% in the last quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. Truth be told the share price declined 49% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.

While the stock has risen 13% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over the last three years, Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises' revenue dropped 8.2% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock has disappointed holders over the last three years, falling 14%, annualized. And with no profits, and weak revenue, are you surprised? Of course, sentiment could become too negative, and the company may actually be making progress to profitability.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 33% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 4% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
