We're Hopeful That Amprius Technologies (NYSE:AMPX) Will Use Its Cash Wisely
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Amprius Technologies (NYSE:AMPX) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Amprius Technologies' Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at March 2023, Amprius Technologies had cash of US$64m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$20m. So it had a cash runway of about 3.2 years from March 2023. A runway of this length affords the company the time and space it needs to develop the business. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is Amprius Technologies Growing?
Notably, Amprius Technologies actually ramped up its cash burn very hard and fast in the last year, by 140%, signifying heavy investment in the business. While that's concerning on it's own, the fact that operating revenue was actually down 37% over the same period makes us positively tremulous. Considering these two factors together makes us nervous about the direction the company seems to be heading. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can Amprius Technologies Raise More Cash Easily?
Amprius Technologies seems to be in a fairly good position, in terms of cash burn, but we still think it's worthwhile considering how easily it could raise more money if it wanted to. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Amprius Technologies has a market capitalisation of US$659m and burnt through US$20m last year, which is 3.0% of the company's market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
So, Should We Worry About Amprius Technologies' Cash Burn?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Amprius Technologies' cash runway was relatively promising. Based on the factors mentioned in this article, we think its cash burn situation warrants some attention from shareholders, but we don't think they should be worried. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 3 warning signs for Amprius Technologies (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
