We think intelligent long term investing is the way to go. But unfortunately, some companies simply don't succeed. To wit, the Park-Ohio Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:PKOH) share price managed to fall 71% over five long years. We certainly feel for shareholders who bought near the top. Even worse, it's down 19% in about a month, which isn't fun at all.

With the stock having lost 15% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

Park-Ohio Holdings isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last five years Park-Ohio Holdings saw its revenue shrink by 0.7% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. If a business loses money, you want it to grow, so no surprises that the share price has dropped 11% each year in that time. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn't grow revenue. Fear of becoming a 'bagholder' may be keeping people away from this stock.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Park-Ohio Holdings, it has a TSR of -68% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Park-Ohio Holdings shareholders are down 14% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 7.3%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 11% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Park-Ohio Holdings .
