MYR Group (NASDAQ:MYRG) Is Experiencing Growth In Returns On Capital
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at MYR Group (NASDAQ:MYRG) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for MYR Group:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$120m ÷ (US$1.5b - US$685m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Thus, MYR Group has an ROCE of 15%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 11% generated by the Construction industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
The trends we've noticed at MYR Group are quite reassuring. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 15%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 91%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. The current liabilities has increased to 47% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. Given it's pretty high ratio, we'd remind investors that having current liabilities at those levels can bring about some risks in certain businesses.
Our Take On MYR Group's ROCE
In summary, it's great to see that MYR Group can compound returns by consistently reinvesting capital at increasing rates of return, because these are some of the key ingredients of those highly sought after multi-baggers. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
