For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like OFG Bancorp (NYSE:OFG). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is OFG Bancorp Growing?
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Shareholders will be happy to know that OFG Bancorp's EPS has grown 31% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. It's noted that OFG Bancorp's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. While we note OFG Bancorp achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 8.0% to US$566m. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are OFG Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
Even though some insiders sold down their holdings, their actions speak louder than words with US$701k more invested than sold by people who know they company best. An optimistic sign for those with OFG Bancorp in their watchlist. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Jorge Colon-Gerena for US$531k worth of shares, at about US$27.40 per share.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for OFG Bancorp bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. To be specific, they have US$26m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 2.0% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
While insiders already own a significant amount of shares, and they have been buying more, the good news for ordinary shareholders does not stop there. That's because OFG Bancorp's CEO, Jos Fernandez, is paid at a relatively modest level when compared to other CEOs for companies of this size. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to OFG Bancorp, with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b, is around US$5.4m.
The OFG Bancorp CEO received US$3.0m in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Is OFG Bancorp Worth Keeping An Eye On?
You can't deny that OFG Bancorp has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. These things considered, this is one stock worth watching. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with OFG Bancorp.
