Central Pacific Financial (NYSE:CPF) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At $0.28
The board of Central Pacific Financial Corp. (NYSE:CPF) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of $0.28 on the 15th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. The payment will take the dividend yield to 3.8%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
Central Pacific Financial's Payment Expected To Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important.
Having distributed dividends for at least 10 years, Central Pacific Financial has a long history of paying out a part of its earnings to shareholders. Past distributions do not necessarily guarantee future ones, but Central Pacific Financial's payout ratio of 44% is a good sign as this means that earnings decently cover dividends.
The next 3 years are set to see EPS grow by 51.0%. Analysts forecast the future payout ratio could be 36% over the same time horizon, which is a number we think the company can maintain.

Central Pacific Financial Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from $0.48 total annually to $1.12. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.8% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that Central Pacific Financial has been growing its earnings per share at 12% a year over the past five years. The company is paying a reasonable amount of earnings to shareholders, and is growing earnings at a decent rate so we think it could be a decent dividend stock.
Central Pacific Financial Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
