Should You Be Adding Bridgewater Bancshares (NASDAQ:BWB) To Your Watchlist Today?
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Bridgewater Bancshares (NASDAQ:BWB). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Bridgewater Bancshares Increasing Earnings Per Share?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Bridgewater Bancshares managed to grow EPS by 15% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. I note that Bridgewater Bancshares's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Bridgewater Bancshares maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 19% to US$92m. That's a real positive.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for Bridgewater Bancshares.
Are Bridgewater Bancshares Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.
It's good to see Bridgewater Bancshares insiders walking the walk, by spending US$557k on shares in just twelve months. And when you consider that there was no insider selling, you can understand why shareholders might believe that lady luck will grace this business. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Todd Urness for US$445k worth of shares, at about US$17.89 per share.
Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Bridgewater Bancshares is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. With a whopping US$91m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That holding amounts to 18% of the stock on issue, thus making insiders influential, and aligned, owners of the business.
While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the pretty picture. That's because on our analysis the CEO, Jerry Baack, is paid less than the median for similar sized companies. For companies with market capitalizations between US$200m and US$800m, like Bridgewater Bancshares, the median CEO pay is around US$1.7m.
Bridgewater Bancshares offered total compensation worth US$1.5m to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Should You Add Bridgewater Bancshares To Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, Bridgewater Bancshares is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Better yet, insiders are significant shareholders, and have been buying more shares. To me, that all makes it well worth a spot on your watchlist, as well as continuing research. Of course, just because Bridgewater Bancshares is growing does not mean it is undervalued.
