Investors in Aptiv (NYSE:APTV) have unfortunately lost 54% over the last three years
If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the long term shareholders of Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 54% drop in the share price over that period. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 26% in a year.
Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Aptiv actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 56% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 11% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating Aptiv further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
Investors in Aptiv had a tough year, with a total loss of 26%, against a market gain of about 36%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 3% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
