While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Apogee Optocom Co., Ltd. (TWSE:6426) share price has gained 27% in the last three months. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. In fact, the share price is down 39%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

The recent uptick of 12% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

Because Apogee Optocom made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over half a decade Apogee Optocom reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 12% for each year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. It seems pretty reasonable to us that the share price dipped 7% per year in that time. We doubt many shareholders are delighted with this share price performance. It is possible for businesses to bounce back but as Buffett says, 'turnarounds seldom turn'.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Apogee Optocom, it has a TSR of -30% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Apogee Optocom shareholders are up 22% for the year (even including dividends). But that return falls short of the market. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 5% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Apogee Optocom better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Apogee Optocom , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
