Polytronics Technology (TPE:6224) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 152% Total Return On Their Investment
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance the Polytronics Technology Corporation (TPE:6224) share price is 112% higher than it was three years ago. That sort of return is as solid as granite. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 38% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 19% in 90 days).

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Polytronics Technology was able to grow its EPS at 4.5% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is lower than the 28% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is feeling more optimistic on the stock, after the last few years of progress. It is quite common to see investors become enamoured with a business, after a few years of solid progress.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Polytronics Technology the TSR over the last 3 years was 152%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Polytronics Technology has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 105% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 21% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Polytronics Technology , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
