TUL (GTSM:6150) Has Rewarded Shareholders With An Exceptional 920% Total Return On Their Investment
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. To wit, the TUL Corporation (GTSM:6150) share price has soared 859% over five years. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. It's also up 56% in about a month.
It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

TUL isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last 5 years TUL saw its revenue grow at 5.9% per year. Put simply, that growth rate fails to impress. So shareholders should be pretty elated with the 57% increase per year, in that time. We don't think the growth over the period is that great, but it could be that faster growth appears to some to be on the horizon. It's not immediately obvious to us why the market has been so enthusiastic about the stock, but a more detailed look at revenue and profit trends might reveal why shareholders are optimistic.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between TUL's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. TUL's TSR of 920% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that TUL shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 283% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 59% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
