Here’s What’s Happening With Returns At Viking Tech (GTSM:3624)
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Viking Tech's (GTSM:3624) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Viking Tech, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.07 = NT$194m ÷ (NT$3.2b - NT$452m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
So, Viking Tech has an ROCE of 7.0%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electronic industry average of 10%.

The Trend Of ROCE
Viking Tech is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 38% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
The Key Takeaway
To bring it all together, Viking Tech has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. Considering the stock has delivered 39% to its stockholders over the last five years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
