Did You Participate In Any Of Donpon Precision's (GTSM:3290) Respectable 34% Return?
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But Donpon Precision Inc. (GTSM:3290) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 11% over five years, which is below the market return. The last year has been disappointing, with the stock price down 4.7% in that time.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Donpon Precision actually saw its EPS drop 51% per year. The impact of extraordinary items on earnings, in the last year, partially explain the diversion.
The strong decline in earnings per share suggests the market isn't using EPS to judge the company. Given that EPS is down, but the share price is up, it seems clear the market is focussed on other aspects of the business, at the moment.
The revenue reduction of 4.8% per year is not a positive. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Donpon Precision's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Donpon Precision's TSR of 34% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
Donpon Precision shareholders are down 1.4% for the year, but the market itself is up 36%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 6% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
