Here's Why I Think Visual Photonics Epitaxy (TPE:2455) Is An Interesting Stock
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Visual Photonics Epitaxy (TPE:2455). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Visual Photonics Epitaxy Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Visual Photonics Epitaxy managed to grow EPS by 13% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Visual Photonics Epitaxy's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 15% to NT$2.6b. That's a real positive.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Visual Photonics Epitaxy's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are Visual Photonics Epitaxy Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Visual Photonics Epitaxy shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold NT$1.2b worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 5.7% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.
Should You Add Visual Photonics Epitaxy To Your Watchlist?
One positive for Visual Photonics Epitaxy is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Visual Photonics Epitaxy has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
