When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For instance, the price of Forward Electronics Co., Ltd. (GTSM:8085) stock is up an impressive 141% over the last five years. It's also good to see the share price up 34% over the last quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 17% in the last three months.

Forward Electronics isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over the last half decade Forward Electronics' revenue has actually been trending down at about 13% per year. Given that scenario, we wouldn't have expected the share price to rise 19% per year, but that's what it did. It just goes to show tht the market is forward looking, and it's not always easy to predict the future based on past trends. Still, this situation makes us a little wary of the stock.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Forward Electronics shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 132% over one year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 19%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Forward Electronics (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
