Returns On Capital At Chang Wah Technology (GTSM:6548) Paint An Interesting Picture
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So, when we ran our eye over Chang Wah Technology's (GTSM:6548) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Chang Wah Technology is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.10 = NT$904m ÷ (NT$12b - NT$2.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
Thus, Chang Wah Technology has an ROCE of 10%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 10%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has consistently earned 10% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 1,245% in that time. Since 10% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
Our Take On Chang Wah Technology's ROCE
To sum it up, Chang Wah Technology has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 1,067% return they've received over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
