Farglory Land Development (TWSE:5522) Has Announced A Dividend Of NT$2.50

The board of Farglory Land Development Co., Ltd. (TWSE:5522) has announced that it will pay a dividend of NT$2.50 per share on the 12th of July. The dividend yield of 4.8% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Farglory Land Development's stock price has increased by 68% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Farglory Land Development's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 115% of what it was earning. Without profits and cash flows increasing, it would be difficult for the company to continue paying the dividend at this level.

Earnings per share could rise by 7.6% over the next year if things go the same way as they have for the last few years. If recent patterns in the dividend continue, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 89% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from NT$3.50 total annually to NT$4.50. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.5% a year over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Farglory Land Development has impressed us by growing EPS at 7.6% per year over the past five years. Although per-share earnings are growing at a credible rate, the massive payout ratio may limit growth in the company's future dividend payments.

Farglory Land Development's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. The payments are bit high to be considered sustainable, and the track record isn't the best. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
