TRK Corporation's (TWSE:1432) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.6x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the Real Estate industry in Taiwan, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.1x and even P/S above 9x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does TRK's Recent Performance Look Like?

The revenue growth achieved at TRK over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on TRK's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For TRK?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, TRK would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 22% gain to the company's top line. As a result, it also grew revenue by 13% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why TRK's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does TRK's P/S Mean For Investors?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of TRK confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
