Applied BioCode (TWSE:6598) shareholders are up 14% this past week, but still in the red over the last three years
Applied BioCode Corporation (TWSE:6598) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 14% in the last week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. In fact, the share price is down 45% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

Applied BioCode isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
Over three years, Applied BioCode grew revenue at 7.9% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. The stock dropped 13% during that time. Shareholders will probably be hoping growth picks up soon. But ultimately the key will be whether the company can become profitability.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Applied BioCode's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Applied BioCode hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of -41% exceeds its share price return of -45%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
Applied BioCode provided a TSR of 7.7% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 6% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Applied BioCode you should know about.
