Examining Cashflow Against Eastech Holding's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Over the twelve months to September 2024, Eastech Holding recorded an accrual ratio of -0.16. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of NT$1.1b, well over the NT$903.9m it reported in profit. Eastech Holding did see its free cash flow drop year on year, which is less than ideal, like a Simpson's episode without Groundskeeper Willie. Unfortunately for shareholders, the company has also been issuing new shares, diluting their share of future earnings.

In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. Eastech Holding expanded the number of shares on issue by 9.5% over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. How Is Dilution Impacting Eastech Holding's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
Eastech Holding was losing money three years ago. On the bright side, in the last twelve months it grew profit by 88%. On the other hand, earnings per share are only up 65% over the same period. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
Changes in the share price do tend to reflect changes in earnings per share, in the long run. So it will certainly be a positive for shareholders if Eastech Holding can grow EPS persistently. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.
Our Take On Eastech Holding's Profit Performance
In conclusion, Eastech Holding has strong cashflow relative to earnings, which indicates good quality earnings, but the dilution means its earnings per share growth is weaker than its profit growth. Considering all the aforementioned, we'd venture that Eastech Holding's profit result is a pretty good guide to its true profitability, albeit a bit on the conservative side.
