Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. For example, the Rich Honour International Designs Co., Ltd. (TPE:6754) share price is down 23% in the last year. That's well below the market return of 39%. We wouldn't rush to judgement on Rich Honour International Designs because we don't have a long term history to look at.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unfortunately Rich Honour International Designs reported an EPS drop of 46% for the last year. The share price fall of 23% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Rich Honour International Designs, it has a TSR of -19% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While Rich Honour International Designs shareholders are down 19% for the year (even including dividends), the market itself is up 39%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. With the stock down 3.3% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Rich Honour International Designs better, we need to consider many other factors.
