The board of Lumax International Corp., Ltd. (TWSE:6192) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of NT$5.00 on the 23rd of May, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. The payment will take the dividend yield to 5.1%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Lumax International's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, Lumax International's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 1.2% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 61% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was NT$4.32 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was NT$5.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.5% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
Lumax International May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Although it's important to note that Lumax International's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. Growth of 1.2% per annum is not particularly high, which might explain why the company is paying out a higher proportion of earnings. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.
In Summary
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. For example, we've picked out 1 warning sign for Lumax International that investors should know about before committing capital to this stock. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
