For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Kinik (TWSE:1560). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Quickly Is Kinik Increasing Earnings Per Share?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Impressively, Kinik has grown EPS by 18% per year, compound, in the last three years. If growth like this continues on into the future, then shareholders will have plenty to smile about.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While we note Kinik achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 6.3% to NT$6.8b. That's a real positive.

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Kinik followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Kinik with market caps between NT$33b and NT$105b is about NT$15m.

The CEO of Kinik was paid just NT$1.5m in total compensation for the year ending December 2023. You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
