We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. Over the last year the Anderson Industrial Corporation (TPE:1528) share price is up 59%, but that's less than the broader market return. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 42% in three years.

Anderson Industrial isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last year Anderson Industrial saw its revenue shrink by 23%. Given the revenue reduction the modest 59% share price rise over the year seems pretty decent. Generally we're pretty unenthusiastic about loss making stocks that are not growing revenue.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Anderson Industrial, it has a TSR of 61% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Anderson Industrial shareholders have received returns of 61% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 5% per year. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
