Sembcorp Industries Ltd's (SGX:U96) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to SGD0.04 on 23rd of August. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 1.9% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Sembcorp Industries' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, Sembcorp Industries was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 161.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 15% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was SGD0.17 in 2012, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SGD0.06. This works out to be a decline of approximately 9.9% per year over that time. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By

Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. In the last five years, Sembcorp Industries' earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 5.6% per annum. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Our Thoughts On Sembcorp Industries' Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Sembcorp Industries' payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Sembcorp Industries is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. For example, we've identified 2 warning signs for Sembcorp Industries (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
