Is ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited's (SGX:C52) Recent Price Movement Underpinned By Its Weak Fundamentals?

ComfortDelGro (SGX:C52) has had a rough week with its share price down 2.0%. It seems that the market might have completely ignored the positive aspects of the company's fundamentals and decided to weigh-in more on the negative aspects. Fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes so it makes sense to study the company's financials. Particularly, we will be paying attention to ComfortDelGro's ROE today.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for ComfortDelGro is:

8.7% = S$265m ÷ S$3.0b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).

The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. So, this means that for every SGD1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of SGD0.09.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

A Side By Side comparison of ComfortDelGro's Earnings Growth And 8.7% ROE

At first glance, ComfortDelGro's ROE doesn't look very promising. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 8.1%. Having said that, ComfortDelGro has shown a modest net income growth of 17% over the past five years. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that ComfortDelGro's reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 21% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.

The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is C52 fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.

Is ComfortDelGro Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?

ComfortDelGro has a significant three-year median payout ratio of 80%, meaning that it is left with only 20% to reinvest into its business. This implies that the company has been able to achieve decent earnings growth despite returning most of its profits to shareholders.

Moreover, ComfortDelGro is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years. Based on the latest analysts' estimates, we found that the company's future payout ratio over the next three years is expected to hold steady at 79%. Accordingly, forecasts suggest that ComfortDelGro's future ROE will be 9.7% which is again, similar to the current ROE.

Summary

On the whole, we feel that the performance shown by ComfortDelGro can be open to many interpretations. While no doubt its earnings growth is pretty respectable, the low profit retention could mean that the company's earnings growth could have been higher, had it been paying reinvesting a higher portion of its profits. An improvement in its ROE could also help future earnings growth. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
