Do Tye Soon's (SGX:BFU) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Tye Soon (SGX:BFU). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is Tye Soon Increasing Earnings Per Share?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Tye Soon's EPS has grown 19% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While Tye Soon may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. Suffice it to say that is not a great sign of growth.

Tye Soon isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of S$25m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Tye Soon Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

Like a sturdy phalanx Tye Soon insiders have stood united by refusing to sell shares over the last year. But my excitement comes from the S$85k that Deputy MD & Executive Director Eng Chian Ong spent buying shares (at an average price of about S$0.29).

Should You Add Tye Soon To Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, Tye Soon's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. The growth rate whets my appetite for research, and the insider buying only increases my interest in the stock. To put it succinctly; Tye Soon is a strong candidate for your watchlist.
