Reflecting on Ascott Residence Trust's (SGX:HMN) Share Price Returns Over The Last Year
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Ascott Residence Trust (SGX:HMN) share price has gained 19% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. After all, the share price is down 20% in the last year, significantly under-performing the market.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Unfortunately Ascott Residence Trust reported an EPS drop of 96% for the last year. This fall in the EPS is significantly worse than the 20% the share price fall. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Ascott Residence Trust the TSR over the last year was -18%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
