United Overseas Insurance's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Prior to this announcement, United Overseas Insurance's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, EPS could fall by 5.7% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 64%, which is definitely feasible to continue.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from SGD0.15 total annually to SGD0.17. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.3% a year over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. United Overseas Insurance has seen earnings per share falling at 5.7% per year over the last five years. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends.
Our Thoughts On United Overseas Insurance's Dividend
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
