If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Sheng Siong Group (SGX:OV8) Before It's Too Late
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Sheng Siong Group (SGX:OV8), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Sheng Siong Group's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Impressively, Sheng Siong Group has grown EPS by 22% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Sheng Siong Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 37% to S$1.3b. That's progress.

Are Sheng Siong Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
First things first; I didn't see insiders sell Sheng Siong Group shares in the last year. Even better, though, is that the CEO & Executive Director, Hock Chee Lim, bought a whopping S$496k worth of shares, paying about S$1.05 per share, on average. Big buys like that give me a sense of opportunity; actions speak louder than words.
On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Sheng Siong Group insiders have a valuable investment in the business. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth S$683m. Coming in at 29% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.
Does Sheng Siong Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that Sheng Siong Group has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. The cranberry sauce on the turkey is that insiders own a bunch of shares, and one has been buying more. So I do think this is one stock worth watching. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Sheng Siong Group (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you need to take into consideration.
