We Think Transtema Group (STO:TRANS) Can Stay On Top Of Its Debt

When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. As with many other companies Transtema Group AB (STO:TRANS) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

How Healthy Is Transtema Group's Balance Sheet?

We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Transtema Group had liabilities of kr849.8m falling due within a year, and liabilities of kr388.9m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had kr109.0m in cash and kr309.5m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total kr820.1m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This deficit casts a shadow over the kr539.0m company, like a colossus towering over mere mortals. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. After all, Transtema Group would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today.

In contrast, our confidence was undermined by its apparent struggle to handle its total liabilities. When we consider all the factors mentioned above, we do feel a bit cautious about Transtema Group's use of debt. While we appreciate debt can enhance returns on equity, we'd suggest that shareholders keep close watch on its debt levels, lest they increase.
