Transtema Group (STO:TRANS) swells 11% this week, taking five-year gains to 159%
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For instance, the price of Transtema Group AB (STO:TRANS) stock is up an impressive 159% over the last five years. It's even up 11% in the last week. But this might be partly because the broader market had a good week last week, gaining 9.2%.
Since the stock has added kr58m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Transtema Group managed to grow its earnings per share at 9.5% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 21% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Transtema Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 6.7% over the last year. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 21% a year, is even better. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Transtema Group has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
