Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Fingerprint Cards AB (publ)'s (STO:FING B) 25% Price Drop
Fingerprint Cards AB (publ) (STO:FING B) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 96% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, Fingerprint Cards' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Electronic industry in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.2x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Fingerprint Cards' Recent Performance Look Like?
For example, consider that Fingerprint Cards' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Fingerprint Cards, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Fingerprint Cards?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Fingerprint Cards' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 31%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 68% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 4.7% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we are not surprised that Fingerprint Cards is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
What Does Fingerprint Cards' P/S Mean For Investors?
Fingerprint Cards' P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It's no surprise that Fingerprint Cards maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
