Why You Should Care About Yubico's (STO:YUBICO) Strong Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So, when we ran our eye over Yubico's (STO:YUBICO) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Yubico is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.24 = kr282m ÷ (kr1.5b - kr303m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Thus, Yubico has an ROCE of 24%. In absolute terms that's a very respectable return and compared to the Software industry average of 20% it's pretty much on par.

So How Is Yubico's ROCE Trending?
In terms of Yubico's history of ROCE, it's quite impressive. The company has consistently earned 24% for the last one year, and the capital employed within the business has risen 51% in that time. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.
One more thing to note, even though ROCE has remained relatively flat over the last one year, the reduction in current liabilities to 21% of total assets, is good to see from a business owner's perspective. Effectively suppliers now fund less of the business, which can lower some elements of risk.
The Bottom Line On Yubico's ROCE
Yubico has demonstrated its proficiency by generating high returns on increasing amounts of capital employed, which we're thrilled about. And since the stock has risen strongly over the last three years, it appears the market might expect this trend to continue. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
