Vitec Software Group's (STO:VIT B) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth

Vitec Software Group AB (publ) (STO:VIT B) shareholders have seen the share price descend 12% over the month. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. We think most investors would be happy with the 294% return, over that period. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.

While the stock has fallen 5.0% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Vitec Software Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 27% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 32% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Vitec Software Group's TSR for the last 5 years was 303%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Vitec Software Group shareholders are up 1.8% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 32% a year, over half a decade) look better. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
