Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Cint Group AB (publ) (STO:CINT) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Cint Group's Net Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Cint Group had €99.3m of debt in September 2024, down from €113.4m, one year before. However, because it has a cash reserve of €23.4m, its net debt is less, at about €75.9m.
How Strong Is Cint Group's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Cint Group had liabilities of €113.2m due within a year, and liabilities of €136.7m falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of €23.4m as well as receivables valued at €106.8m due within 12 months. So its liabilities total €119.6m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
This deficit isn't so bad because Cint Group is worth €204.0m, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Cint Group's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
In the last year Cint Group had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 30%, to €193m. To be frank that doesn't bode well.
Caveat Emptor
Not only did Cint Group's revenue slip over the last twelve months, but it also produced negative earnings before interest and tax (EBIT). Indeed, it lost €8.5m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. However, it doesn't help that it burned through €8.1m of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we do consider the stock to be risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example - Cint Group has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
At the end of the day, it's often better to focus on companies that are free from net debt. You can access our special list of such companies (all with a track record of profit growth). It's free.
