AB Sagax (publ) (STO:SAGA A) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 16th of May to SEK2.70. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 1.1%, which is below the industry average.

AB Sagax's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. The last dividend was quite easily covered by AB Sagax's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 3.4% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 56%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

AB Sagax Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was SEK0.182 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SEK2.70. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 31% a year over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Over the past five years, it looks as though AB Sagax's EPS has declined at around 3.4% a year. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits.

Our Thoughts On AB Sagax's Dividend

Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. With shrinking earnings, the company may see some issues maintaining the dividend even though they look pretty sustainable for now. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
