David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that NP3 Fastigheter AB (publ) (STO:NP3) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. How Healthy Is NP3 Fastigheter's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, NP3 Fastigheter had liabilities of kr1.94b due within 12 months, and liabilities of kr14.0b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of kr197.0m and kr112.0m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total kr15.7b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
This deficit is considerable relative to its market capitalization of kr16.0b, so it does suggest shareholders should keep an eye on NP3 Fastigheter's use of debt. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). We'd go so far as to say NP3 Fastigheter's net debt to EBITDA was disappointing. But at least it's pretty decent at growing its EBIT; that's encouraging. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but we'd generally feel more comfortable with less leverage. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt.
