Brinova Fastigheter (STO:BRIN B) Takes On Some Risk With Its Use Of Debt

When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. As with many other companies Brinova Fastigheter AB (publ) (STO:BRIN B) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. How Strong Is Brinova Fastigheter's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Brinova Fastigheter had liabilities of kr1.57b due within a year, and liabilities of kr4.06b falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of kr193.5m as well as receivables valued at kr45.3m due within 12 months. So its liabilities total kr5.40b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the kr1.63b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. Our View
To be frank both Brinova Fastigheter's net debt to EBITDA and its track record of staying on top of its total liabilities make us rather uncomfortable with its debt levels. But at least it's pretty decent at growing its EBIT; that's encouraging. Overall, we think it's fair to say that Brinova Fastigheter has enough debt that there are some real risks around the balance sheet. If all goes well, that should boost returns, but on the flip side, the risk of permanent capital loss is elevated by the debt.
