Earnings Tell The Story For I-Tech AB (STO:ITECH) As Its Stock Soars 26%
I-Tech AB (STO:ITECH) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 4.7% in the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, I-Tech's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 27.7x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 23x and even P/E's below 15x are quite common. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
I-Tech could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like I-Tech's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.2%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 77% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 32%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that I-Tech's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From I-Tech's P/E?
I-Tech shares have received a push in the right direction, but its P/E is elevated too. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of I-Tech's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
