Stille AB's (STO:STIL) robust recent earnings didn't do much to move the stock. We think this is due to investors looking beyond the statutory profits and being concerned with what they see.

In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, Stille issued 79% more new shares over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. A Look At The Impact Of Stille's Dilution On Its Earnings Per Share (EPS)

As you can see above, Stille has been growing its net income over the last few years, with an annualized gain of 249% over three years. In comparison, earnings per share only gained 117% over the same period. And at a glance the 90% gain in profit over the last year impresses. But in comparison, EPS only increased by 19% over the same period. Therefore, one can observe that the dilution is having a fairly profound effect on shareholder returns.

In the long term, earnings per share growth should beget share price growth. So it will certainly be a positive for shareholders if Stille can grow EPS persistently. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Alongside that dilution, it's also important to note that Stille's profit suffered from unusual items, which reduced profit by kr17m in the last twelve months. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Stille took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to September 2024. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit look worse than its underlying earnings power.

Our Take On Stille's Profit Performance

Stille suffered from unusual items which depressed its profit in its last report; if that is not repeated then profit should be higher, all else being equal. But on the other hand, the company issued more shares, so without buying more shares each shareholder will end up with a smaller part of the profit. Given the contrasting considerations, we don't have a strong view as to whether Stille's profits are an apt reflection of its underlying potential for profit.
