Despite currently being unprofitable, Sedana Medical (STO:SEDANA) has delivered a 135% return to shareholders over 3 years
While Sedana Medical AB (publ) (STO:SEDANA) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 30% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been very strong. The share price marched upwards over that time, and is now 135% higher than it was. After a run like that some may not be surprised to see prices moderate. The thing to consider is whether the underlying business is doing well enough to support the current price.
While the stock has fallen 15% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

Given that Sedana Medical didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.
Over the last three years Sedana Medical has grown its revenue at 38% annually. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Meanwhile, the share price performance has been pretty solid at 33% compound over three years. This suggests the market has recognized the progress the business has made, at least to a significant degree. Nonetheless, we'd say Sedana Medical is still worth investigating - successful businesses can often keep growing for long periods.

A Different Perspective
The last twelve months weren't great for Sedana Medical shares, which performed worse than the market, costing holders 32%. Meanwhile, the broader market slid about 1.5%, likely weighing on the stock. Fortunately the longer term story is brighter, with total returns averaging about 33% per year over three years. Sometimes when a good quality long term winner has a weak period, it's turns out to be an opportunity, but you really need to be sure that the quality is there. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
