Investor AB (publ) (STO:INVE A) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 14th of May to SEK3.75. This takes the annual payment to 1.7% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Investor's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. However, prior to this announcement, Investor was quite comfortably covering its dividend with earnings and it was paying more than 75% of its free cash flow to shareholders. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 83% shows that most of the cash is going back to the shareholders, which could constrain growth prospects going forward.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 2.3% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 14%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from SEK2.00 total annually to SEK5.20. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 10% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. However, Investor has only grown its earnings per share at 2.3% per annum over the past five years. Earnings growth is slow, but on the plus side, the dividend payout ratio is low and dividends could grow faster than earnings, if the company decides to increase its payout ratio.

Our Thoughts On Investor's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Investor is earning enough to cover the dividend, we are generally unimpressed with its future prospects. We don't think Investor is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
