Cautious Investors Not Rewarding QleanAir AB (publ)'s (STO:QAIR) Performance Completely

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.6x QleanAir AB (publ) (STO:QAIR) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Sweden have P/E ratios greater than 23x and even P/E's higher than 42x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Recent times have been advantageous for QleanAir as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

QleanAir's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 66% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 38% each year during the coming three years according to the one analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 22% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that QleanAir's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On QleanAir's P/E

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that QleanAir currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
