Loomis' (STO:LOOMIS) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Loomis AB (publ) (STO:LOOMIS) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 13th of May to SEK14.00. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 3.4%.
Loomis' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Loomis' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 89.5%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 33%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of SEK5.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of SEK14.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 11% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Unfortunately, Loomis' earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year. Loomis is struggling to find viable investments, so it is returning more to shareholders. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.
Our Thoughts On Loomis' Dividend
Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
