Vestum AB (publ) (STO:VESTUM) Shares May Have Slumped 27% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Vestum AB (publ) (STO:VESTUM) shares are down a considerable 27% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 43% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Vestum's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Construction industry in Sweden, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Vestum's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Vestum has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this strong revenue performance might be about to tail off. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

Vestum's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 205% gain to the company's top line. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 8.0% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 6.0%.
In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Vestum's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On Vestum's P/S
Vestum's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our check of Vestum's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue isn't bringing down its P/S as much as we would have predicted. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.
