Peab AB (publ) (STO:PEAB B) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to SEK1.50 on the 14th of May. This payment takes the dividend yield to 2.4%, which only provides a modest boost to overall returns.

Peab's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. However, prior to this announcement, Peab's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 12.8%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 27%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was SEK1.80 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SEK1.50. The dividend has shrunk at around 1.8% a year during that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Peab May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. However, Peab's EPS was effectively flat over the past five years, which could stop the company from paying more every year.
Our Thoughts On Peab's Dividend
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We don't think Peab is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
