A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From OX2 AB (publ)'s (STO:OX2) 36% Share Price Climb
OX2 AB (publ) (STO:OX2) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 36% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 20% over that time.
Even after such a large jump in price, OX2's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 24x and even P/E's above 40x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
OX2 could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

OX2's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 18%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 223% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 40% per annum as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 19% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's peculiar that OX2's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Final Word
OX2's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of OX2's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
